OCT diagnostics

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) diagnostic examination, is a non-invasive method that allows ophthalmology to obtain high-resolution images for analyzing the state of the cornea, the central part of the retina (macula), and the optic nerve head (papilla). Through computerized analysis, it is also possible to reconstruct the structure in planes (two dimensions) or volumes (three dimensions).

Optical coherence tomography is performed using state-of-the-art equipment that utilises low-coherence interferometry. The operating principle of interferometry is similar to that of ultrasound, but it uses a harmless laser beam instead of acoustic waves.

What is the examination for?

OCT is indicated for patients in whom corneal, retinal, and optic nerve diseases are suspected. OCT provides information about structural changes in the retina, accurately identifying their location. It also allows automated measurement of tissue thickness (useful for monitoring disease progression) and corneal analysis, assessing structural alterations and lesion depth. Optical coherence tomography is invaluable for the diagnosis, monitoring, and clinical decision-making for many important retinal diseases, including:

  • Senile and juvenile macular degeneration
  • Serous and haemorrhagic detachment of the retinal neuroepithelium and pigment epithelium
  • Intraretinal and preretinal neovascularisation
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal venous occlusion
  • Acute and chronic chorioretinopathies
  • Macular oedema
  • Retinal atrophy
  • Macular hole and pseudohole
  • Vitreoretinal interface pathologies, such as vitreoretinal tractions and epiretinal membranes (macular pucker)
  • Foveal retinoschisis
  • Glaucoma

Feel free to contact the practice to schedule an OCT examination; Dr. Testoni is at your service.
