Diagnostics with OCT
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive diagnostic test that allows ophthalmologists to obtain high-resolution images that can be used to analyze the condition of the cornea, the central part of the retina (macula), and the optic nerve head (papilla). Computerized analysis also allows for the reconstruction of the structure in two-dimensional planes or three-dimensional volumes.
Optical tomography is performed using state-of-the-art equipment that uses low-coherence interferometry. The operating principle of interferometry is similar to that of ultrasound: the reflection of a harmless laser beam instead of acoustic waves.
What is the purpose of the exam?
OCT is indicated for patients suspected of having a corneal, retinal, or optic nerve disorder. OCT provides information on retinal structural changes, precisely identifying their location. It also allows for automated measurement of tissue thickness (useful for monitoring disease progression over time) and corneal thickness, analyzing structural changes and identifying the depth of lesions. Optical coherence tomography is indispensable for the diagnosis, monitoring, and clinical decision-making regarding the treatment of many important retinal diseases, such as:
- Age-related and juvenile macular degeneration
- Serous and hemorrhagic detachment of the retinal neuroepithelium and pigment epithelium
- Intraretinal and preretinal neovascularization
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Retinal vein occlusion
- Acute and chronic chorioretinopathies
- Macular edema
- Retinal atrophy
- Macular hole and pseudohole
- Vitreoretinal interface pathologies, such as vitreoretinal tractions, epiretinal membranes (macular pucker)
- Foveal retinoschisis
- Glaucoma
